Founded by a small group of Virginia Tech graduate students, Torc Robotics, headquartered in Blacksburg, Virginia, is an independent subsidiary of Daimler Truck AG, a global leader and pioneer in trucking. Founded in 2005 at the birth of the self-driving vehicle revolution, Torc has over 18 years of experience in pioneering safety-critical, self-driving applications. Torc offers a complete self-driving vehicle software and integration solution currently focusing on commercializing autonomous trucks for long-haul applications in the U.S.
An autonomous vehicle leader since 2005, Torc's purpose is driving the future of freight with autonomous technology. As the world's leading autonomous trucking solution, Torc empowers exceptional employees, delivers a focused, hub-to-hub autonomous product, and provides customers with the safest, most reliable, and most cost-effective solution to the market. Torc is invested in looking for early-in-career talent that can adapt to the company, take charge, and spearhead upcoming projects to fruition.
Torc has experienced unprecedented growth, marking their 15th anniversary in 2020. Since then, they've established a test center in Albuquerque N.M., along with locations in Austin, Tx, and Stuttgart, Germany. They've been able to double in size in the past three years, and with that has come a greater need to fill roles in the early talent space so that they can continue developing great technology and bring the best possible for their customers' needs.
Torc’s growth in recent years has created an influx of applicants for some of their most desired internship roles. While this has been a good problem to have, it’s been their biggest pain point throughout recruiting seasons. As the Global University Relations and Recruiting Program Manager at Torc, Wayne Epps is part of a small team extending their reach into colleges and universities to connect with students that align with what Torc looks for in ideal candidates. It’s his aim to provide as many opportunities as possible to the students applying, but sometimes it’s hard to navigate the sheer volume of applicants.
"How can we be strategic and make sure we're spending our time getting through all the different resumes, going to campus, and making those connections? You want to provide opportunities for everybody and make sure it's fair. This is where Symplicity has been key in our process"
By including Symplicity Recruit in its recruiting strategy, Torc has been able to sift through applicants in a more manageable way. Through Symplicity Recruit’s Global Search, Torc has the unique opportunity to find best-fit candidates by narrowing down the search. This way, they can focus on finding students that are enrolled in university programs currently implementing some of the tools and technologies Torc looks for in fields such as artificial intelligence.
Using Symplicity Recruit’s Managed Campaigns feature, Torc has been able to find students for hard-to-fill positions by allowing Symplicity Recruit’s Campaign team to identify the search criteria, query the database and develop a communication plan that delivers interested candidates directly to Torc within a couple of days of the campaign's launch.
Since joining Symplicity Recruit in January 2023, Torc has been able to better identify those miscellaneous students that could have easily slipped through their fingers before. Torc was looking for a platform that they could partner with as a smaller resource team and strategize the time spent looking for candidates.
Recently, Torc had a brand-new team for which they needed to hire interns. Yet, with such specific requirements for the role, they were uncertain about the applicant turnout. By looking through student profiles on Symplicity Recruit, Torc narrowed the list of students to candidates with a background in specific engineering tools that were new on the market. With the help of Symplicity Recruit, Torc was able to hire the best-fit candidate for the role and extend an offer based on their resume.
"She's been here for two months now and has been absolutely amazing. If you're interested in being a better partner [to universities], then why not use the [Symplicity Recruit] platform?"
